Spring is beginning to arrive in Longyearbyen and with it we welcome our next writer in residence, Roald Berg professor emeritus of modern history at the University of Stavanger.
Alumni News: Emma Stibbon presents her first large-scale show at a major UK institution
Stibbon will create an immersive experience for the viewer, aiming to act as a stark reminder that the seemingly remote events of polar ice sheet melt is directly connected with the changes being witnessed in a more local and familiar UK landscape.
Artica successfully qualified as an Active Member of the Gallery Climate Coalition in 2023
We are pleased to announce that Artica Svalbard has successfully qualified as a 2023 Active Member with Gallery Climate Coalition. To achieve Active status we had to demonstrate that our organisation had implemented environmental sustainability best practice in line with GCC guidance.

Welcome artist in residence Cathrine Alice Liberg
Cathrine Alice Liberg is a Norwegian-Singaporean artist and printmaker working in a variety of techniques, including lithography, photogravure, cyanotype, etching and mezzotint. Her art revolves around the family portrait, where she contemplates the stories that were lost through her family’s migration, and how descendants can never become reliable narrators of their ancestors’ lives.

We are very pleased to welcome pastry chef Ethan Kan to Artica to host this one of kind workshop. Inspired by the end of polar night and the ethereal glow of moonlit nights, this workshop invites participants to immerse themselves in a ritualistic culinary experience.
This month we are pleased to welcome Ellen Viste, writer in residence
Ellen Viste lives in Bergen, where she works as a communication adviser at the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research. Having a background as a meteorologist and climate researcher, she has also worked extensively with popular science writing on weather and climate.

The final Artica Writings 2023 essay is out now: Recipes for disaster by Nikhil Vettukattil
All my assumptions about Svalbard fell apart before I had even got off the plane. There are on average two flights a day from Oslo to Longyearbyen, which always make a stop in Tromsø, northern Norway. I knew Longyearbyen had a population of just under 2400, and I naively assumed the flights were operating out of some national necessity, seeing as the island of Svalbard is 400 miles north of the nearest Norwegian shore.

Highlights from 2023
In 2023 we had the pleasure of welcoming 12 new residents to Artica: Maritea Dæhlin, Åse Kristine Tveit, Nabil Ahmed, Kristin Folsland Olsen, Rikke Luther, Yamile Calderón, Grace Ndiritu, Helene Sommer, Nikhil Vettukattil, Rafiki, Ruth Maclennan and Trine Hamran.
