Meet the Residents: Ellen Heck and Inma Herrera

  • Artica Svalbard Vei 603-3 9170 Longyearbyen Svalbard (map)

Join us for an engaging evening with our current artists in residence, Ellen Heck and Inma Herrera. This is an opportunity to hear directly from the artists about their unique practices and the exciting projects they’ve been developing during their time in Svalbard.

Ellen Heck, nominated by The Queen Sonja Print Award, is an accomplished printmaker based in North Carolina. For over a decade, Ellen has explored questions about identity—its creation, variability, persistence, and change—through her intricate printmaking techniques. Her visual narratives embrace both the deeply personal and the universal, inviting reflections on the complexities of self and society.

Inma Herrera, an artist based in Helsinki, returns to Svalbard to continue her project, "Arctic Tales of Mother Earth." Drawing inspiration from Svalbard’s geological history, Inma explores fossil imprints using the "Rubbing Printing" technique, a traditional, non-invasive image transfer method. Her work weaves together themes of imprint, time, and extinction, utilising eco-friendly printmaking techniques. This residency builds on her initial stay in 2022, as she continues her exploration of the Arctic's geological legacy in response to the unique and challenging environment.

This event offers a chance to meet the artists in person, hear about their creative journeys, and ask questions about their work.

Tea and coffee will be available, and there is no need to book—simply come along.

We look forward to welcoming you.
