Artica Svalbard is pleased to welcome Januario Jano as New Artist in Residence
We are thrilled to introduce the next artist in residence to arrive in Longyearbyen - Januario Jano, an interdisciplinary visual artist who divides his time between London, Luanda, and Lisbon. With an MFA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths University, Januario's diverse practice encompasses sculpture, video, photography, textiles, sound installations, and performance, all grounded in extensive research.
Januario's work delves into themes of memory, cultural identity, and production. Through his art, he explores concepts of home and self, continually challenging his approach with historical insights and contemporary narratives. His practice reflects the growing interdependence of global economies, cultures, and populations.
Fascinated by the interplay between fiction and reality, Januario addresses the pressing issues of human and non-human coexistence. Using materials like textiles and fabric, Januario's work engages with global topics, economics, and politics.
Januario Jano has been nominated by our partner Queen Sonja Print Award the and will be staying in Longyearbyen until the end of July.
