Alumni News: Rikke Luther’s ‘Dust & Flow’ Exhibition Now Open at Gotland Art Museum

We are excited to announce that Dust & Flow, the latest exhibition by Artica Svalbard alumnus Rikke Luther, is now open at the Gotland Art Museum in Sweden and runs until September 22nd, 2024. The exhibition features work developed during Luther’s residency at Artica Svalbard in May and June 2023, where she explored the environmental impacts of climate change in the Arctic.

The exhibition features large-scale textile wall drawings and the new film Dust & Flow: Muds, Movement, Time, Scale (2024). The film explores the social, political, and biochemical effects of the Earth's new "mud landscapes," caused by global warming. It takes viewers on a journey through shifting landscapes in Gotland, Iceland, and Svalbard, contrasting scientific research on sediment fluxes, environmental DNA, and geological "deep time" with our limited cultural understanding of history and time.

The film Dust & Flow: Muds, Movement, Time, Scale was commissioned by the Nordic Alliance of Artists' Residencies on Climate Action (NAARCA), of which Artica Svalbard is a part. The project received support from Art Hub Copenhagen, Baltic Art Center, and the Swedish Arts Council. The film was developed as part of Rikke Luther's post-doctoral research, The Ocean-Lands: Mud within the Earth System, funded by Novo Nordisk at Queen Margrethe's and Vigdis Finnbogadottir's Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Ocean, Climate and Society (ROCS).
