In June 2023 we welcomed Oslo based artist Yamile Calderón, who shares her recommendations of books, music and where to find anything you might need during your stay at Artica.

It has been a wonderful experience to be at Artica in Longyearbyen, here I would like to share some of my favourite things:

1. Meeting, talking and getting to known the locals and other artists-in-residence has been very enjoyable and has helped a lot to inspire my work and understand the place.

2. The Patti Smith concert was a highlight! (Patti Smith played a concert at the culture house on 17th June 2023)

3. The Paradox of Svalbard: Climate Change and Globalisation in the Arctic by Zdenka Sokolíčková (2023) is a complete investigation that explains the actual situation in Svalbard.

4. A woman in the polar night by Christiane Ritter (1934)

5. I have been listening to:

• Promises by Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders & The London Symphony Orchestra

• Polar Sequences by HIA & Biosphere

• Focus a Hans Zimmer compilation

6. I love the sushi from Nuga

7. If you need anything during your stay then visit Longyearbyen Bruktikken a second-hand shop, run by volunteers, where everything is free
