Artica Svalbard’s Annual Report 2024 Now Available

Artica Svalbard is pleased to announce that our Annual Report for 2024 is now available to read online in both Norwegian and English.

This past year was one of deepening engagement, new collaborations, and critical reflection on the role of arts and culture in the Arctic. We expanded our residency programme, welcoming both new and returning residents, including artists, writers, and researchers. Our public events, workshops, and partnerships fostered conversations on pressing Arctic issues, while our digital presence grew, extending the reach of these discussions beyond Longyearbyen. As we move forward, the need for cultural and artistic engagement in the Arctic has never been more important.

The 2024 Annual Report provides a comprehensive overview of our work throughout the past year, including:

A summary of the year from Artica Svalbard’s director, Charlotte Hetherington – reflecting on key moments, achievements, and the evolving role of Artica in the Arctic.

Our residency programme in 2024 – featuring 12 incredible residents, including artists, writers, and researchers, who spent a total of 93 weeks in Svalbard working on diverse projects.

Projects, events, and community engagement – from public talks, exhibitions, and workshops and the launch of Art Club.

NAARCA’s progress – a look at the Nordic Alliance of Artists’ Residencies on Climate Action, including new commissions, sustainability toolkits, and a reflection on three years of collaboration.

Key publications – the latest edition of Artica Writings, focusing on food sustainability in Svalbard, and the sold-out success of our publications at Kunstbok Oslo.

Our carbon report – detailing our emissions in 2024, the challenges of Longyearbyen’s energy transition, and the steps we’re taking to reduce our environmental impact.

Alumni news – updates on past residents and how their work continues to develop and reach new audiences worldwide.

Plans for 2025 – including the expansion of independently-funded residencies, new project developments, and an evolving nomination process to enhance our residency programme.
